Water (Health Pillar #1)

- Henry David Thoreau

Water is the single most important nutrient for our body! You must have water to perform every function within your body and when you do not have enough water those functions cannot be carried out properly.

Many aliments that people suffer from stem from being dehydrated. Headaches, Back Pain, Arthritis, Intestinal Problems, Weight Gain, Skin Problems, lack of energy, depression, the list goes on and on! Most people when facing these symptoms see a doctor, get a pill, cover the symptom without fixing the problem, and continue on with their life until they have another problem that needs another pill and this cycle goes on and on and on!

I am not a doctor and I am not telling anyone to throw out every pill that their doctor has prescribed to them. I am simply asking that each and every one of you pay attention to your body and try to unmask and fix the problem instead of covering up one symptom after another!!!

Dr. Colbert treats almost every patient he has with water before he does anything else. In his 25+ years of practice he has found that a lot of times this takes care of many of their aliments! He often tells patients that when they have a headache, joint pain, heart burn, or depression its not becasue they have a Tylenol, Advil, Pepcid, or Prozac deficiency. It is usually because they are dehydrated!

How much water should you be drinking?
You should be drinking 1/2 ounce of water for each pound that you weigh.
So, if you weigh 150 lbs, you should be drinking 75oz of water!

This may seem like a lot of water, so start slow. If you are currently drinking around 8-16oz/day, then bump it up to over 32 oz. Slowly increase your water until you get to the proper amount for your body!!!

What kind of water should you drink?
In the simplest of answers, clean, slightly alkaline, and with natural minerals!

I know a lot of you are probably wondering what constitutes clean and slightly alkaline water and I promise I will be going into detail on what kind of water you should be drinking, but until then the following are some safe options (also, for those of you who don't want the details and just want to know what to drink, be sure you drink a combination of the waters listed below because they each have some benefits and downfalls, but with a combination you should get the best of both worlds):

-Distilled water (can be purchased by the gallon in most grocery stores, the gallon should say distilled on it)
- Purified water (check the label on the bottle for the word reverse osmosis, ex. the walmart brand that says great value on it is purified)
-Certain bottled waters (the following are some of the best and cleanest, however they are more expensive)
1) Penta water
2) Evamor
3) Deer Park
4) Zephyrhills
5) Evian
6)Fiji
7) Panna
8) Smart Water

As always, if you have any questions be sure to ask!

Seven Pillars of Health by Don Colbert

Currently I am rereading a favorite book of mine, The Seven Pillars of Health by Don Colbert. This book goes through the 7 things you must have in order to be healthy. I understand that everyone does not find reading about this stuff interesting or fun, so I will be summarizing each of the 7 sections for you with as little medical jargon as possible. If you wish for more detail, you can email me a specific question or get the book. I am sure you can find it at a library or on Amazon for approx. $10!

According to Dr. Colbert (and Shanna ) these are the seven things you must have to be healthy:

1) Water

2) Sleep and Rest

3) Living Food

4) Exercise

5) Detoxification

6) Nutritional Supplements

7) Stress Coping Practices

I will be focusing on 1-2 of these areas each week!

I look forward to your questions!

Stop the Excuses, Work through the Reasons!

I am a Training Manager and I talk with people all day about their health and fitness goals and lack there of! During my time training I have found that 90% of people have an Excuse and 10% of people have a Reason for why they don't take care of themselves. My goal is to get people to STOP THE EXCUSES and WORK THROUGH THE REASONS!!!!

The only purpose of this blog is to educate people on how to take care of their bodies and uplift them to a place where they know they can!! I feel like our schools, government officials, healthcare providers, and media have done a very poor job of educating the general public on how to care for their bodies!

I want everyone to reach their full potential and know how great it feels to truly be healthy! I want to share the information that I have learned. I want you to share the information with others. I want the people I know to be changed because I was here!

I will be posting workouts, nutrition advice, supplement research, holistic healthcare information, information from some of my favorite books, general health advice, and some fun stuff too!

I look forward to receiving questions from you guys and will do my best to give you a honest, non-biased, and educated response!

Shanna Johnston!
